How I wore it: born in the USA

Hey, y'all. Yesterday (it was COLD and RAINY yesterday, boo!) my husband and I were invited to a nice dinner in the home of a Greek couple to whom we're quite close (they were the "best couple"/witnesses at our City Hall wedding); they'd also invited another Greek couple, so we had a fun time chatting about music, language, Sanskrit, and academia. I was the only non-Greek in the group, but everyone took my slightly slower reaction time with ease and were generous in explanations. Since we were having a cozy dinner at our friends' home, I didn't want to get too overdressed, but I'd had an idea in my head for an outfit for a while and I decided to go for it:

I decided to put together a black kurta and my white jeggings to create a sort of home-grown churidar pajama look (the churidar is the tight pant beneath the kurta - the pants I have from India are the loose, forgiving salwar). The funny thing is that all the elements of my outfit were bought in the States. The jeggings, as you know, are from TJ Maxx; and the kurta? I bought that at H&M many years ago, I think around the summer of 2002. It was labeled a "dress," but due to the very high slits on either side (not seen in the picture, but you can sort of tell by the shape of how it falls), unwearable as such. I've almost only exclusively paired it with bright red pants in the States, and, in India, where I wore it at least once or twice a week, I'd pair it with some loose salwar-esque pants that I was fond of. Anyway, I was thrilled with how it looked with the tight, white jeggings, so I'm pretty sure that I'll return to this look again. I'm a very big fan of black and white outfits and I think these jeggings will be my ticket in finally getting the hang of it...

Anyway, the dinner was amazing, the conversation was great, and the evening was a great success. Yay for friends!

I've had an an unusually social weekend - what have y'all been up to?

  1. Oh, I'm going to do a copy-cat of this. I bought a kurta in my thrift store shopping last fall, one with beautiful embroidery and this look gives me the courage now to wear it.
