How I wore it: dentist and waffling

So today was my second (of three) dentist appointments in order to fill some cavities. Gross. That was ... pretty much the only thing I did today. Oh, I vacuumed. I was so excited to be reunited with my wardrobe (at least before another blizzard whacks Boston), so I pretty much dressed as if my closet vomited on me:

Purple! Turquoise! Brown! Glasses necklace! Side braid! Life is pretty crazy when you have to go to the dentist, yeah?

I don't really have much to say: I wanted to wear my turquoise corduroy leggings and I like pairing my grey boots with them. And purple. And brown. And fun jewelry. I ... don't think these things out in advance, people.

The fun thing is that I tried something new with my hair, as you can see. I've worn my hair in a single braid many a time, but this is the first time I attempted a loose sideways braid. I'm usually wary of the side-hair thing, as I am a child of the 80s and I don't want to look as if I'm stuck in a weird hair era. The braid was a little messier than my usual, as I'm all about the control, and it got a little mussed up what with scarf-tying, jacket-wearing, and dentist-wrangling; but at the same time, I really liked the loose frame it made for my face:

... At the same time, you can imagine what this means: I ... kind of don't want to cut off all my hair anymore. I mean, I do, but I realized that I still enjoy playing with the different hairstyles that long hair can provide. And it's weird, because I rarely waffle on things once I make a decision, but... huh. I guess I'll just wait until tomorrow and see if I need a new prescription/frames (highly unlikely, although one can only hope...) and then take it from there. I'm also very willing to let my stylist boss me around. And, as I said before - it's only hair.

But man, is second-guessing one's self annoying...

  1. Well, the good thing about hair is that it always grows back. And if you chop it off, maybe you can collect the hair and make your own cheesy hair extensions like the ones they sell on HSN. Or at least glue it to the inside of a hat so you have a hair-hat. See, I'm full of good ideas today.

  2. Luckily, you don't have to make up your mind anytime soon about the hair. I like to save dramatic hair chops for big deals- milestones, end of a stressful situation, etc. Also, weird hair eras can really work for some people. I had this coworker's wife who rocked the most amazing Farrah hair. Blonde and billowy, like a dream.

  3. Katie, your ideas are brilliant. You're a genius!

Rad, it's funny. When I first cut off all my hair, it was after a heartbreaking break-up with my severely unsuitable ex. How was I to know that I'd love short hair on me?!

  4. Hey, wow, your pictures look really great today. And that last one is super cute.
The great thing about second guessing youself (at least this time) is that you don't have to make a choice. HA! Great isn't it? Turns out if you don't want to you don't have to.

Also, I wish that my closet would puke up cute clothes on me. Normally, I just get Nigel's opinion...or her farts and scares himself. It's a win win.

  5. I've cut my hair off after unsuitable exes before. Once to make sure the guy who said "I'll break up with you if you ever cut your hair" would never come back.

I liked your pixie, but I have to say the side braid is cute. BUT. Short hair rocks. See, I'll help you waffle!

  6. This outfit looks great - I wonder if I can coax my closet into puking on me? I doubt it. My closet is so difficult. Sigh. But enough about me... I love the side braid!!

  7. I'm on team short hair to tell you the truth, but I understand the appeal of longer hair. I'm sure I'll grow mine out again sometime in the next couple of years.

    I love that necklace!

  8. I'll make a deal with you since I've been slowly growing my hair out to wear the exact way you've styled it here! If you cut your hair, I'll take the braid! Read a story recently about Chanel cutting off her hair. After she did it, her maid washing the braid and laid it out beside the other clothing set out for that day.

  9. Aww, thanks, Miss B! I had actual light today in my apartment! We'll see what happens with my decisions and second decisions.

Cynthia, your waffling help is most welcome!

Thanks, Allison! Maybe my closet could teach your closet to puke?

Thanks for your opinion, LHdM. The good news is that with hair, as we well know, things can change relatively quickly in whatever way you want. I love that you change up your hair frequently. I think I'm starting to tend back for the short hair, too.

Oh, Terri. My hair was as long as it is now when I first cut it all off. I was planning to donate the foot of hair that I had amassed, but my mom begged to keep it for sentimental value. So somewhere in her closet is a dismembered ponytail of my hair. I think in her youth in South America it was more common to use fake hair for one's hairstyles.

  10. Long hair all the way! I chopped my hair off in August 2009, right before starting grad school, and after the novelty wore off, I started getting really irritated with it. Thankfully, my hair grows fast, so now it's back down to the middle of my back, which is where I can actually deal with it. Short hair requires product and styling and actual effort to get it to look good, whereas long hair is for lazy people (ie. me). Put it back in a messy bun, throw it into a braid, let it hang loose... It all looks good and requires minimal effort.

And in my case, it is way easier to do historical hair styles with long hair than to deal with wigs and hair pieces to get the appropriate look. But I realize not everyone is bound by that parameter when it comes to hair length. ;)

I guess this all just means I'm really pro-long hair.

  11. Love the braid, leggings, and the doubled-up glasses!

  12. Sarah, it's funny - I did almost NOTHING with my hair when I had it short and it's a much bigger hassle for me now. But I'm still deciding! Also, I think my current hair would only work for Ancient Egypt and the recent past. :)

Thanks, Sal! When I bought this necklace, the guy at the counter remarked that it matched my glasses!

  13. I have a friend who recently cut 3' of her hair off and has the most adorable pixie cut ever. She totally rocks the Audrey Hepburn look, and she's really happy with it. There is the ability with shorter hair to do some really cute 1950s styles, like the fabulous hair that Ava Gardner had in "Barefoot Contessa". I just don't think I can handle the styling regime, though! Anything more elaborate than a braid and forget it. ;)

Also, I meant to say before that I love that necklace you're wearing! I have been tempted to get one in the past but always worried that it wouldn't look right. Now I'm kind of rethinking that based on your photos!

  14. Yay! Get the necklace! I was kinda worried about what on earth I'd DO with it once I bought it, but I love it!

  15. What an awesome necklace! I like the sideways braid on you - not at all 80s.

I think I am set with short hair now for good - I can't handle long hair on me.

  16. Thanks, Sheila! Also, you make short hair look good. :) I'm fairly itching to chop it again!

  17. I love this outfit & color combo! And the braid is cute, too. :)

  18. I think you were the person who taught me that turquoise + brown were a good combo. I think we were at H&M. And I think I never would've figured that out on my own.
